The Southern Slavic Girl

Sarah S Nester

Growing up in Carolina Appalachia, cooking was a family affair that brought us all together. Some of my earliest memories are of my aunt Sandy's gentle instruction on how to set the table with her fine china and our family heirloom china. I discovered that cooking was not only a creative outlet, but also a way to express myself and connect with my heritage, which ultimately shaped #TheSouthernSlavicGirl. I believe that we are all connected by the food we eat, the recipes we share, and the traditions we pass down from generation to generation. It is through these culinary traditions that we connect with ourselves and with one another, and for me, the simplicity of this is what makes life sweeter than southern tea.

When my family and I settled in the Nashville area in 2019, it hit me like a ton of blinis: there was no Eastern European food to be found! My husband and I met and dined all over Philly and lived in DC, so it wasn't just a gap in the Nashville market, but a reflection of the southern U.S. region as a whole. Although these two cuisines may seem vastly different, they share some surprising similarities. Having had my babushka Luba's (or, Lou, to act southern) recipe book passed down to me, I know firsthand how easy it is blend my southern Appalachian roots with her traditional Eastern European dishes. Both cuisines have a rich history and cultural significance that is reflected in their unique flavors and cooking techniques.

East Meets South Hospitality Group is an ode to this fusion, keeping the love that my grandmothers and great-grandmothers poured into their food alive in my heart. When I prepare those recipes, I feel like they are right there with me, guiding my hands and imparting wisdom as before. Now I get to share my unique blend of cultures inspired by them with the world. More than just food, it's about upholding family tradition. I want my daughters to learn the recipes and heritage so they too can pass it down for ages to come. It is a legacy of love that we are honored to share!
